Será o maior investimento energético de sempre na Graciosa. Com menos de cinco mil habitantes, a ilha açoriana sempre teve o seu consumo de electricidade dependente de uma central alimentada a gasóleo. Dentro de poucos anos isso pode mudar. A Electricidade dos Açores (EDA) e a empresa alemã Younicos deverão assinar "até ao final deste mês" um acordo que levará à ilha um investimento de cerca de 25 milhões de euros em renováveis, revelou ao Negócios o presidente da EDA, Duarte Botelho da Ponte.

The Graciosa project
Supplying the Azores island of Graciosa with renewable energies is the first project to be implemented in our island test bay.
Graciosa, “the gracious one,“ is the second-smallest Azores Island, with about 4,500 inhabitants. In our island test bay, we recreated electrical supply to the island on a scale of 1:3. Producers and consumers are simulated in real time using high-resolution measurement data from the island: wind speed, solar radiation and load curves. This puts the island’s future energy provision to the test to scale.
Project implementation will start in 2012. Once the project is concluded in 2013, no supertanker will ever need to call at the island again. With a mixture of wind and solar energy, supplemented by energy storage systems and a backup system that will operate on vegetable oil produced locally, the island of Graciosa will be able to generate its own energy in a CO2-free manner.
With the Graciosa project we prove that stable energy supply based on renewable energies can be implemented now and that it is cost-efficient over its life cycle.
